Huasteco civilization goes back to the 10th century BC. They were known for their great musical ability and their pottery. They thrived as a productive society until the Aztecs conquered them in 1450. They continued to pay tribute to the Aztecs until they were conquered by the Spanish Empire between 1519 and the 1530s. They were often sold as slaves by the Spaniards.
One of the Huasteco subgroups is the San Francisco Chontala Huasteco.
During the 20th century Mexico has improved the infrastructure of the Huasteco homeland, bringing them closer to the rest of the country. The education system is also improving.
The San Francisco Chontala Huasteco people are mainly farmers but some work in the mining industry, ranching or distilling tequila.
They are almost all Roman Catholic, but the form of Catholicism allows for many pre-Colombian religious practices.
